I think I read in Buzz Aldrin's book that NASA's mandate is to do Science in Space. If it were more specific like, protect the Earth from Asteroid collisions, it would be more focussed. Going to an and landing on an Asteroid would take on a whole new meaning especially if were one that could collide with earth some day. We could then go back and justifiably set up a base there to deplete it and throw the dust out into space. Who knows what mineral wealth we might be able to mine on it. At least we would be doing something.
